How to Install Attic-Dek Flooring

How to Install Attic Flooring

From: diynetwork.com

These basic instructions demonstrate how to install a new type of flooring called Attic-Dek. It is made up of square plastic panels that look like drainage grates and easily attach to a joist with screws.

  • Time - Day
  • Price Range - $250 - $500
  • Difficulty - Easy to Moderate

Step 1: Install the Deck Panels

The deck panels are made to fit between the joists (ours are 16" on center).

Begin by dryfitting the decking together. Start from the opening and work outward. Make sure the panels line up with the top edge (Image 1).

Drive 2" deck screws into the joists to attach the panels (Image 2).
When installing the attic panels, be sure to use the screws to hold them in place securely. Five screws should be used in areas that will be walked on. Otherwise, save yourself some time and just put in three screws.

Step 2: Fix Obstructions

If a panel doesn’t sit all the way down, break off the tabs that hold the panel in place (Image 1).
The ventilated panels allow the insulation to breathe and are easy to remove if needed.
If there are obstructions, mark the tile, and use a reciprocating saw to cut the panel (Image 2).
